Bonjour from Le Marais ! Once upon a time, there was a palace in the heart of Le Marais, a medieval castle composed of numerous buildings and towers named Hôtel des Tournelles, which was the second only in size to the Louvre. This beautiful Royal Palace was built in 1388 by the Chancellor of France. After his death, the hotel had many owners over the years.

It was much loved by kings such as Louis XI and Louis XII who liked to spend time in the huge park of the Hôtel des Tournelles taking part in equestrian sports and jousting. But one day, in 1559, King Henri II had a terrible accident while jousting outside the former Palace. A lance pierced one of his eyes and he was mortally wounded. The Kings death in the castle ten days later, caused the fall of the Royal Palace.

Catherine de Medicis, his wife, chose to leave the palace and divide the lands into plots and later, the Place des Vosges was built and inaugurated in 1612. Now the palace is just a souvenir, and to honour its memory, the Hôtel Les Tournelles is now a luxury boutique hotel close to the Place des Vosges, were the old palace used to be.
