FROM LE MARAIS WITH LOVE |
|||||||||||||
Bonjour from le Marais, I'm very happy to introduce you to the artistic work of the fabulous Veronika von Volkova. Veronika is a Canadian photographer who currently spends most of her time in Montreal, but she visits Paris regularly and delights in travel in general. She has an interest in the shape of public spaces that drives her to photograph them during empty hours, and a slowly growing collection of images of parks and public walkways taken at 4am in various cities around the world. She also loves working with musicians and dancers in creating layered dreamy portraits. Veronika has a great love of Paris, and especially adores the Marais. I first met her 7 years ago, and we immediately became friends; we share a passion for architecture and art, and an appreciation of beauty and decadence. These images are a marvellous example of the diversity of the Marais, which offers so much whether you enjoy daytime walks, or prefer to wander through after the sun has set. Veronika gives you a new vision of some of the local architecture that continues to delight her year after year, starting with historic Francois-Miron where you can find 14th century buildings and wrought iron balconies featuring the elm pattern. She takes you on a wander down Petit-Musc eventually arriving at the ornate Hôtel Fieubet where the windows catch reflections of nearby trees and the midday sky. As the evening falls, the lights come on in the garden at Square Georges Cain, and the water of the Stravinsky Fountain by Centre Pompidou calmly reflects the sculptures that have grown still for the night. Romantic cinema appears on the side of a building as you stroll along rue de La Perle. In the end you find yourself at Places de Vosges enjoying the shape of the space as lit by the streetlights at 4am. Enjoy Veronika's photography and August in Paris. Pascal Fonquernie |

11 and 13 Francois Miron - 14th century buildings, one of which now houses Au Pluriel Club, club échangiste et libertin. The historical buildings are mentioned here: |

Not that you can see any of that in the picture, and of course I haven't ever been inside. Parismarais.com mentions rue Petit Musc, somewhat in passing, here: |

I took this on or near rue Petit Musc. It's just a whimsical thing because I was charmed by that bird that someone had put in with their window garden. |

All of these were taken around 4am at Place des Vosges. They are long exposure shots for which I used a tripod. 4am is a funny time to go out in Paris (as a tourist) because it's very quiet, but there are also groups of workers cleaning the streets so it feels safer than one would expect for such an odd time of night in a large city.There are a lot of mentions of Place de Vosges on PARISMARAIS.COM, of course. |

I took this while out one night with you, and I have to admit I'd had a few drinks and I don't remember quite where in the Marais we were at this point. |

Square Georges Cain. Taken a bit hastily when out for a walk with you and Arnaud. I completely intend to return sometime with my tripod and properly retake it. I would love to do a series of night time Marais gardens. Oh! Or a combination of both morning shots when the sunlight is just starting to appear, and evening shots where the gardens have turned on their lights for the evening. That's a nice project idea. Square Georges Cain is here: |

The Stravinsky Fountain late in the evening. This is another slow exposure photo for which I carried over my tripod. Centre Pompidou is mentioned here: |

This is another photo taken while out with the PARISMARAIS Team last summer. We were right by La Perle (or as my friend Robyn and I started calling it after a couple evenings where I possibly drank a bit much there: the peril) This show was part of the Nomades festival : |
