LE HAUT MARAIS. SO HAUT !

blank

Le Haut Marais is without a doubt the neighbourhood growing the most in this moment. Everyone is talking about it as the most sought after neighbourhood in Paris. The largest concentration of French cinema stars live around the rue Charlot, rue de Poitou, rue de Bretagne, rue Saintonge, and Square du Temple. We often see them strolling and shopping. Le Haut Marais is in fact the place where the enclosure of the Templar knights’ fortress formerly was. It is a neighbourhood charged with history and it is today the one which attracts the most celebrities from all over the globe.

Le Haut Marais has nonetheless fortunately and happily been able to keep a village spirit. Certain people refer to it as Boboland (“Bourgeois Bohemian land”), however actually it reflects in reality a large mix of populations including retired creative artists. Many new residents are foreigners. Italians top the list, then Americans, English, and Brazilians. They love this little island of provincial charm in the heart of the big city.

Le Haut Marais is so popular that many unscrupulous real estate agents restaurants and hotels that are not actually in the Marais advertise themselves as being here. Be careful, the Haut Marais is only the north of Rue Rambuteau, South-east of République, Square du Temple, rue de Bretagne, rue de Poitou, and rue des Filles du Calvaire.

One of Le Haut Marais’ most charming boutique hotels in fact is simply and elegantly called “Hotel du Haut Marais”. Consisting of only 8 rooms and suites, you will receive a charming and authentic welcome. Among the other fantastic hotels in the area are the Hotel des Archives, the Hotel du Vieux Saule, the Hotel du Petit Moulin and the New Hotel Molay. The Hotel Molay is in the middle of a full renovation, but 3 floors are already completed, and soon it will be a very chic boutique hotel with its own fitness club.

Pascal FonquernieHere for your pleasure below are some of the best addresses of “Le Haut Marais”. Isn’t is so chic and so Haut ?

Enjoy le Haut, ( and le Bas ) Marais!

Le Petit Curieux

This adorable little gem right in the heart of the Haut Marais has a warm, friendly atmosphere that draws you in as does its name. The dishes are traditional with an unexpected twist that never fails to please, such as the appetizer of truffled poached eggs, or the purée of carrots and cumin. Main dishes such as roasted spare ribs with homemade barbeque sauce and basmati rice or ravioli with saffron sauce practically melt in your mouth. Portions are generous, well worth every calorie, but better to fast beforehand than miss out on their beautiful and delectable desserts, such as chocolate fondant with Bailey’s sauce or the delectable tarte Tatin. The house wine is good, quite reasonable, and sold either by the bottle or “à la ficelle” (meaning you pay for what you drink of the bottle).

Beaucoup

The third restaurant of Julien Fouin and Ludovic Dardenay opened in rue Froissart after six months of renovation work. Large windows, blond wood, Scandinavian seats, and blue benches are surrounded by industrial suspensions. Residents, hipsters of the rue de Bretagne, and fashion people who are "not too familiar with the crisis," often know the place well. With an average bill of 40-45 euros, in fact, it is better not to know the crisis. However, they do have a mini formula for lunch only at 16 euros (starter + main course) and one at 21 euros (appetizer, main course, dessert).

Merci

Merci's aim is to bring together, under one roof, products and customers who traditionally have not had the chance to meet : vintage furniture or contemporary creations; emerging new fashion brands or already-recognised collections; impulse buys, affordable for all or much rarer pieces, sometimes in limited editions.
Merci is a shop which works like a magazine. Over 15 exhibitions/events around a selection, and an original theatrical design in harmony with the year, have transformed the place into a "store-destination".
