LIVING IN THE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF FRANCE

Bonjour Parismarais readers,

September in Le Marais is a very busy month with many trade shows, fashion shows, the Deco Show, the World Car Show…. It’s also the busiest and one of the most popular months of the year for the tourist industry. Every day our partner hotels receive requests from visitors hoping to get discounts in September and requesting cheap prices, thinking that this month is the beginning of the low season, but this is not the case! Super high season in Paris – with high prices – is starting now. We can never say it enough: if you want to get the bargain of the century for your stay in Paris, come in August, or wait until November or January.

Fortunately, Parismarais.com will always try to find you the best places to stay for the best deals, so you can get a hotel room in Paris in September, and perhaps even at reasonable prices.

Do not miss the annual "Journées du Patrimoine", when the whole country takes a peek inside the sites and monuments that only the privileged normally get to see. September 20th and 21st will be your opportunity to visit the Marais' most impressive mansions. Of the long list found at the official site, http://www.journeesdupatrimoine.culture.fr, our favorites are the Musée Carnavalet, the Hôtel de Ville, Tower Saint Jacques, the Hôtel de Sully and the Hôtel de Sens (now Bibliotheque Forney), as well as Hôtel Donon, the museum of the 18th century where you can actually see one of Marie Antoinette’s beds. There are nearly 50 sites to discover in the two arrondissements of the Marais, district 3 and 4.

To discover the events in French, you are also welcome to visit the Parismarais Blog for the complete listing: click here.

For nearly 15 years, Le Marais has been the area of Paris dedicated to design and decoration. Many well-known designers have opened showrooms and boutiques, attracting decor addicts in everything from contemporary to baroque. One place that is offering all of these styles at once and a fabulous selection of “what’s coming next” is our favorite bazaar, le BHV (pronounced bay-ash-vey).

Le Bazar de l’ Hôtel de Ville is unique in so many ways and is a decor show by itself. You’ll want to visit the 4th and 5th floors first for home design (www.BHV.fr)

Scroll down for a tour of our favorite boutiques and great tips for enjoying Le Marais this fall. And enjoy the TV film we did for the preview of the fashion show featuring the new 2009 men’s wear collection by Pierre Talamon, one of our favorite local designers. View it here:

We hope you will embrace the French heritage one way or another, and enjoy the fabulous past heritage Le Marais offers each and every day…

A bientôt!

YOU TOO ARE PART OF THE FRENCH HERITAGE

Our new French Ancestry feature lets you discover the land of your family's past.

Believe it or not, the populations of France and the United States have been closely linked for hundreds of years. While French explorers and settlers originally came to present-day Canada in the 17th and 18th centuries, the years that followed saw several large-scale immigrations of Franco-Canadians to America. Throughout the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, hundreds of thousands of Francos left Canada and Acadia for areas such as New England, Louisiana, and upper New York State. Today, more than 10 million Americans can trace their ancestry back to France.

Now, Maison de la France is proud to offer a new program that can help you trace your own “francestry” all the way back to the exact French region and town or village where your forefathers (or foremothers) lived before coming to North America.

Just visit our French Ancestors Web site and enter your name to begin exploring your French roots. We’ll send you information on your ancestor's year and place of birth in France, along with a personalized travel guide to help you experience the land of your family's past.

SWITZERLAND AND THE FRENCH ALPS: AFFORDABLE, CHARMING, ELEGANT AND BEAUTIFUL: An ideal destination just three hours from Paris.

When I was a child I lived in Annecy, the medieval town that has a fabulous lake in the Alps. Every weekend, the great event was a daily escape to Geneva and Switzerland, located only 30 km from where we lived. This year, I went back to Switzerland to visit dear friends who moved to Lausanne a few months ago and to Crissier on the highest point of the city. Crissier is home to one of Switzerland’s best restaurant, ROCHAT (http://www.philippe-rochat.ch). This restaurant has 3 Michelin Stars.

The city of Crissier now also hosts the World biggest Advertising Film Library that produces worldwide LA NUIT DES PUBLIVORES ("The Night of the Ad-Eaters").

It was probably one of the most enjoyable vacations I had this year. First, because I was staying with great people in Le Château de Crissier, home of Jean-Marie Boursicot, creator of the “Night of the Ad-eaters.” Mr. Boursicot owns the only film library in the world dedicated to TV and cinema commercials.

Today, this unique library contains more than 800,000 commercials from all around the world, the very first one dating back to 1898!

With this incredible collection, in 1981 Jean Marie Bouriscot created a unique concept which soon became a huge and well-known event in more than 40 countries, “The Night of the Ad-Eaters®.” We will soon have more information about the next shows in Paris. If you wish to have the “Night of the Ad-Eaters” in your own city, simply write to them. They produce shows all over the world and your city could be next. Visit http://www.nuitdespublivores.com

Switzerland is best known for being (and it’s not a cliché): elegant, polite, chic, spotless and luxurious. Even the Swiss sense of humor is all of these things. Swiss roman people are adorable and could give lessons on politeness to even the most well behaved British and French.
And the landscapes in Switzerland are to die for…

Places not to miss:
A stroll through the old town of Lausanne, the Cathedral, the cobbled Place de la Palud which is a perfect spot for people-watching, The Fondation de l'Hermitage: http://en.fondation-hermitage.ch/, The Olympic Museum in Lausanne Ouchy (on the shores of Lake Geneva), a gastronomic cruise on the lake abord a "Belle Epoque" paddle steamer (visit http://www.cgn.ch/eng/), an elegant way to reach the city of Montreux, famous for its international Jazz Festival but also for the Château de Chillon (http://www.chillon.ch/en/), its elegant and flowery promenade along the lake...

Being aware of the difficulties encountered by travelers when confronted with unfamiliar cooking traditions and terms, the author dedicates this first guidebook to tourists, amateurs of French gastronomy .

APARTMENT RENTALS AND GUESTROOMS IN PARIS

Looking for somewhere unique to stay for your next holiday? Parismarais selects only the best of the best apartments and private guestrooms in each category. You can rest assured that when you rent a flat with the owners and companies we select, you’ll be welcomed like a friend, benefit from great service and enjoy exceptional accommodations.

Tips about rentals:  You can trust the owners or agencies that are based in France and have representatives here. Many companies based abroad offer you rentals without respecting the French laws and without offering you any insurance. Every week we receive complaints by deceived customers who have encountered such agencies based in the USA, UK or Asia. To be sure they are legitimate a good question to ask the agency is if they are members of the Paris Tourist Office or Maison de La France. If they are, it means they are legally based here and provide all guarantees that the apartment and company do exist, and that in case of any problem, you’ll have someone reliable to assist you, like in any good hotel.
